Summer talks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Austria in particular, summer talks are interviews on political topics that take place in late summer.

They are usually organized and published by television, daily newspapers or weekly magazines, which give them an opportunity to fill the summer slump. The discussions are usually unusually long and try to deal with all the topics relevant to the autumn, as well as the party's fundamental positions and personal matters on the top candidate. These interviews before the autumn elections are of particular interest.

ORF summer talks

The summer meetings of the ORF find since 1981 traditionally held in late August or early September. The chairmen of the parliamentary parties are invited to the individual discussions . It is broadcast on ORF2 .

From 2004 to 2006 these interviews took place live and in front of a hall audience. In 2007 they were recorded with a time delay and at different locations, and a representative from the print media was invited. Due to the early elections, the summer talks in 2008 were dispensed with in favor of ten confrontations between the top candidates of the parties represented in the National Council and an elephant round.

The 2009 summer talks were held under the motto Art and Politics by ORF journalist Ingrid Thurnher and a prominent artist from an Austrian festival stage. In the following year 2010, together with Ingrid Thurnher, a prominent economic representative (including Hannes Androsch etc.) put the questions to the politicians. The programs were recorded on the day of broadcast at the sites of the invited entrepreneurs.

In 2011 the conversations were broadcast live from the roof foyer of the Vienna Hofburg . Ingrid Thurnher was again the moderator. As part of the "My question" campaign, the population was able to ask the politicians questions, which were then recorded in the program.

In 2012, as before in 2005, ORF journalist Armin Wolf moderated the program. The conversations were broadcast from the places where the respective politicians grew up. The broadcasts were recorded outdoors on the day they were broadcast. In a short portrait of the politicians, their life before politics was described. People from the personal environment of the politicians had their say.

In 2013, as in 2008, there were no summer talks because of the National Council elections .

In 2014, Peter Resetarits moderated the summer talks for the first time . The programs were broadcast live in front of an audience from the ORF center in Küniglberg and focused on the concerns of the citizens. For this purpose, people were interviewed in advance at various locations in the country. From this, questions on particularly moving topics were selected and recorded as contributions. If the citizens to be seen in the contributions were present in the studio, they could briefly discuss the topic with the politician.

In 2015, the summer talks were moderated by Hans Bürger , head of domestic affairs at the ORF TV editorial team. The discussions took place in the ring tower of Wiener Städtische Versicherung . They were recorded before the broadcast at around 7 p.m., because when the broadcast was broadcast at 9:05 p.m., the view of Vienna would have been disturbed by reflective headlights or the darkness. The most important comrades-in-arms of the party leaders were presented in short portraits. In addition to current political issues, the focus was on the fundamental values and perspectives of the party leaders. In terms of audience ratings, the 2015 Summer Talks were the most successful to date with a total of 2.9 million viewers. The conversation with the FPÖ chairman Heinz-Christian Strache on August 17, 2015 reached the all-time record with an average of 1.007 million viewers. Previously, the conversation with Frank Stronach on August 3, 2015 with an average of 827,000 viewers had already surpassed the previous record from Jörg Haider's 1994 with 807,000 viewers.

In 2016, the six talks from July 25th to September 5th were moderated by Susanne Schnabl , the presenter of the ORF domestic policy magazine Report . They were broadcast live from the ORF studio on Küniglberg. As in previous years, the broadcast date was on Mondays at 9:05 p.m.

ORF Summer Talk 2017 with Christian Kern and Tarek Leitner

In 2017 the summer talks were moderated by Tarek Leitner . They took place despite the upcoming National Council election. The conversations were recorded in a glass studio in front of the parliament in Vienna on Mondays at 7.30 p.m. and, as in previous years, were broadcast on ORF2 at 9:05 p.m. The summer talk with ÖVP boss Sebastian Kurz set a new record with 1.034 million viewers. On average, the Summer Talks 2017 attracted 769,000 viewers with a market share of 28 percent, making them the most watched to date. In the run-up to the conversation with SPÖ Federal Chancellor Christian Kern there was criticism from ÖVP candidate Efgani Dönmez , according to which the moderator was biased because of a joint vacation with Kern, but before his political function. Dönmez accused Leitner and Kern of two more vacations, and it turned out that only their families, but not Leitner and Kern themselves, were on vacation together.

In 2018, the summer talks with the five party leaders of the parliamentary groups represented in the National Council were held by Hans Bürger and Nadja Bernhard . For the first time in six years, they did not take place in Vienna , but on a vineyard in Rossatz in the Wachau ( Lower Austria ).

In 2019, the summer talks were moderated by Tobias Pötzelsberger . In 2020 these will be presented by Simone Stribl .
