Political career and functions

Josef Bucher worked for the Carinthian Chamber of Commerce between 1997 and 2003, among other things as a chamber councilor and member of the tourism section. He has been a board member of the Carinthian Economic Society since 2001 and was a member of the Presidium of Austria Advertising between 2000 and 2006. Bucher has been a member of the supervisory board of Kärnten Werbung and the supervisory board of Tourismus Holding Kärnten since 2002. Since 2005 he has also been chairman of the supervisory board of Kärnten Werbung and Tourismus Holding Kärnten and from 2005 to 2006 he was also the regional tourism director of the Province of Carinthia.

Josef Bucher entered the National Council for the FPÖ on December 20, 2002 and joined the BZÖ after the party split . In the National Council elections, he was re-elected to the National Council through the Carinthian state election proposal. In 2005, Bucher took on the role of spokesman for finance, budget, tourism and the Court of Auditors and was chairman of the tourism committee between 2006 and 2008.

On April 16, 2009 Bucher was nominated as the new party chairman by the board of the BZÖ. On April 26, 2009, he was elected to succeed the deceased party leader Jörg Haider at a party congress with 99.4 percent of the delegate's votes.

As a result of the splitting off of the by far most important BZÖ regional association “ Die Freiheitlichen in Kärnten ”, which rejected Bucher's course as legally liberal (considerable parts of the BZÖ Carinthia switched to the FPK) and joining the Federal FPÖ, Josef Bucher became on January 30, 2010 in a founding convention of the new BZÖ Carinthia with 99.6% (with only one invalid vote) also elected provincial chairman in Carinthia, with Stefan Petzner representing him as executive provincial chairman.

On October 2, 2013, three days after the National Council election , in which the BZÖ failed to return to parliament due to the much greater pull of the FPK in Carinthia, Bucher resigned as party chairman.
