Summer slump

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The summer slump is a term used in the mass media , especially the daily press and news agencies , for a time with little news, which is mainly due to the summer break of political institutions and sports leagues, as well as cultural institutions.

Many politicians are on summer vacation; there are less politically relevant events and dates. Sports clubs have no significant games or competitions during this period. The news turnover of the press agencies is therefore falling noticeably. In this time, which is generally low in news, the media then also report on events and people for whom there would otherwise be no airtime and no space in the newspapers, or more often report alleged sensational reports without news value - such as in 2010 local reports pushed via Twitter about a vandal Flower tubs - which may turn out to be newspaper ducks. Also use lobbyists and so-called backbenchers the silly part to bring up this week with their own issues.

The earlier expression “ pickle time” is used with a similar meaning .

Summer potties

Sommerlochtiere is a humorous term for animals that are the subject of news media coverage during the news-poor summer slump. The longest lived and most famous summer looper in the world is the Loch Ness Monster . Typical examples are escaped or abandoned non-native wild animals, which pose a potential danger to humans, sometimes also domestic animals that evade their owners by escaping, or old zoo animals that have died. In some years these curious stories get the highest attention for several days, even weeks. In the summer of 1982, for example, a puma allegedly roamed around in southern Denmark for several weeks (see also the article Alien Big Cats ). The Danish police went on an unsuccessful hunt for the animal. 33 years later, such a puma was sighted again. This time, the German police in the border town of Flensburg near the Friedenshügel district went in search of the animal without success. Further examples of such summer prey animals are the spectacled caiman Sammy (1994), "killer catfish" Kuno (2001), " problem bear " Bruno (2006), the swan Petra (2006 to 2008), the cow Yvonne (2011), the saltwater crocodile Max (2015) ., the dog Flecki (2015), "Problem Stork" Ronny (2016) and a yellow anaconda (2018).
