Yvonne (domestic cattle)

A Simmental Fleckvieh , the breed to which Yvonne also belongs.

Yvonne (* 2005; original name: Angie , also Bambi † September 3, 2019) was a brown and white domestic cattle . In the summer of 2011, she gained media attention when she escaped from human care and could not be captured for more than three months because she was in hiding.

Yvonne was initially kept as a dairy cow on a farm on a mountain farm in Unterkremsberg in the Austrian Liesertal . In the spring of 2011, a farmer from the German district of Mühldorf am Inn in Bavaria bought them in order to fatten them and then slaughter them. On May 24, 2011, she moved away from her owner's pasture and has since stayed in a wooded area near the Zangberg district of Palmberg and in Taubental, where, despite great efforts, she could not be found at times; occasionally she was seen there in the open field.

Yvonne generated considerable feedback in the mass media and on social networks . On 1 September 2011, the District Office Mühldorf reported, Yvonne had on a pasture in Ampfinger joined their counterparts district Unteralmsham. On September 2, 2011, she was from Henning Wiesner , former director of the zoo Munich Hellabrunn , and employees of Gnadenhofs Gut Aiderbichl by using tranquilizer darts and several tethers captured and brought to the court near Deggendorf. There she was euthanized on September 3, 2019 at the age of 14.

Hazard potential

The question of whether the free roaming cow posed a danger, especially for road traffic, was assessed differently. Supporters of the actions for Yvonne denied this, while the authorities were already considering killing the animal by shooting it down. Because of their much larger body mass, cattle pose a much greater risk to road users than wild animals. According to media reports, the cow had crossed a street on July 29, 2011 and almost collided with a police car. She was then released for shooting on July 30, 2011. However, she has avoided the streets since then.

Then they bought animal rights activists in order to house them at one of the sanctuaries of animal rights activist Michael Aufhauser in the Deggendorf district called Gut Aiderbichl . The maximum speed on the adjacent road was reduced from 100 to 30 km / h, fences were erected on the roadside and an initially intended targeted killing operation was dispensed with for the time being.

The danger prevention ordinance issued because of Yvonne, on the basis of which she should have been shot, was suspended until August 26, 2011. On August 26, 2011, the launch permit was completely revoked. Meanwhile, a poster with the words "Kill the cow" appeared.

The previous owner warned about the animal's temperament: he sold her because she was so nervous. If she got into trouble, she would likely become dangerous.

Trapping attempts and PR campaign

The operators of the Aiderbichl estate and their volunteers spread new methods of catching Yvonne almost every day, which the media liked to pick up on. They used another cow, a calf and a bull, which Yvonne was supposed to lure out of the forest through herd, mother and rutting instinct. They also set up a feed trap in the forest with a bracket over a manger to prevent animals approaching the manger from escaping. However, all these attempts were initially unsuccessful. Yvonne visited the other animals, but only under cover of night so that she could escape again afterwards.

From mid-August 2011, a helicopter with a thermal imaging camera was used for the search . The costs were borne by the private radio station Antenne Bayern and the Gut Aiderbichl Foundation. Because of the hot weather, attempts were made to stun the cow before dark while searching for drinking water. Since it is difficult to shoot an anesthetic arrow into a muscle in the forest area, it was also discussed whether to lure Yvonne out of the forest with food at night with food.

Critics condemned these trapping attempts as "a baiting". Not only the cow, but all animals in the forest would be frightened by the massive crowd. That's why they disappeared into the thicket. The only way to find Yvonne would be to leave the forest alone for a few weeks.

The President of the Berlin Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple , Avnish Kumar Lugani, pointed out on August 22, 2011 that the cow has the right to live. You should therefore not be killed, but must be captured. She is "not a tiger or a lion" and therefore not dangerous. Indian media also highlighted the religious aspect.

At the end of August 2011, the attempts to catch were declared provisionally ended. The cow should be "left alone". One wanted to wait until it showed itself, it said. The further efforts were led by Aufhauser together with the veterinarian and former director of the Munich zoo Hellabrunn Henning Wiesner .

On the evening of August 31, 2011, Yvonne was found grazing on a piece of land and identified by her ear tag. On the morning of September 1, 2011, Wiesner stunned her with two rifle shots and then brought her to Gut Aiderbichl to live with her son Friesi , her sister Waltraud and the calf Waldi .

Media coverage

Yvonne's disappearance caused extensive coverage in the German media. All of the major newspapers, magazines and television stations reported on them.

In Facebook , numerous initiatives established that found in her disappearance and the inability of people to capture them, Fallen. There was concern for the cow's physical integrity and life. By August 29, 2011, over 27,000 supporters came together in the largest relevant Facebook group.

Abroad, the British daily newspapers The Independent and Guardian , the Canadian radio station CBC Radio 1 and National Public Radio reported on the runaway cow . In France, a blog by the news magazine Nouvel Observateur and the international broadcaster Radio France Internationale dealt with the incident. The New York Times reported on the media coverage on one of their blogs. The cow was also featured in Abu Dhabi newspapers and Yvonne was featured on radio stations in India and South Africa .

In some media, the hype about the runaway cow was described as a typical summer slump topic. Others put the question of the possible shooting in the foreground and saw parallels to other sensational animals that had been shot in Bavaria in recent years, especially the then so-called problem bear Bruno . In some media reports she was referred to as a "problem cow" in analogy to Bruno.

On August 13, 2011, the Bild newspaper offered a reward of 10,000 euros for tips that led to the cow being caught. She shouldn't be hurt in the process. However, only a few responded to this call to look for Yvonne.

The Ö3 "callboy" Gernot Kulis claimed in a telephone joke on August 12, 2011 that he had caught the cow and demanded a ransom of 10,000 euros in a train station locker in Salzburg. He will then tie the cow to platform 8, where there are no more trains anyway. Otherwise, he will hand them over to a slaughterhouse that will pay over 5,000 euros. The phone joke was broadcast on August 22, 2011.

Joe Heinrich released the first Yvonne song on August 10, 2011 with the satirical ode to a strong woman cow Yvonne . On August 15, 2011 the duo SinGold Melodies released the popular song Yvonne, die Kuh (“Moo, moo, I am the cow and have a heart just like you. Moo, moo, my name is Yvonne and if I want, I run away .") on Youtube. The text sung by Petra Schauer came from Heinz-E. Klockhaus, the composition of duo member Theo Bachschmid. The media reported about it from August 17, 2011. The grace chapel Eschlbach followed on August 24th with Yvonne, you wuide Kua ("Hey Yvonne, you Wuide Kua, live in the forest and want nua dei Rua. Hey Yvonne you super fast, jump over a fence like a gazelle."), In to whom their story will be told up to this point. On August 31, 2011, Joe Heinrich published a fictional interview with Yvonne, in which the song by SinGold Melodies was apparently criticized from a beef's point of view for alleged meat consumption, while his own song was praised for alleged vegetarianism.

On May 25, 2016 RTL reported on the cow Yvonne.

EM oracle

In June 2012 Yvonne was used as the “animal oracle” for the 2012 European Football Championship. The cow was supposed to predict the outcome of the games with German participation for the broadcaster Bayern 3 . Before the respective games, she should decide on a feed bucket decorated with the national flags of the teams. On June 8th, 13th and 15th, 2012, Yvonne first ate from the bucket with the flags of the opponents of the German team and incorrectly predicted them as the winners. After that, the rules were changed: the trough that Yvonne ate from should denote the loser. Yvonne thus correctly predicted the outcome of the following two games: In all five games she always ate out of the loser's trough.

Behavioral research

Klaus Reiter, professor of behavioral research for farm animals at the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture , judged the cow's behavior to be unusual. According to Reiter, the cow appeared to have quickly found its way back to the original instincts of a wild animal. So she changed her sleep rhythm and slept during the day to graze in the evening. That is why the beef was also referred to as the “cow that wants to be a deer”. According to the Berliner Tagesspiegel, this designation was first used by the Passauer Neue Presse .

The statement of the head of the Institute for Animal Hygiene, Animal Welfare and Farm Animal Ethology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover , Jörg Hartung, was confirmed. He had pointed out that cattle were herd animals. Therefore, Yvonne will ultimately come out of the forest again and look for the company of her fellows. Since they have no natural enemies in the area and because cows can adapt well to the external conditions, there is no danger for them in this respect: "Cattle can survive well as long as they have feed," he told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .

The bull Ivan escaped in October 2011 and lived for around eight months in a forest in Trausdorf in Burgenland . In June 2012, after several attempts, he was also caught by Gut Aiderbichl employees and brought to the estate.
