The Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple Berlin is a project of the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple e. V. to build a Hindu temple in Berlin . The inauguration of the temple is to take place in the last week of October 2020 (as of March 2020).

Upon completion, the temple will be the second Hindu temple in Germany, alongside the Sri Kamadchi Ampal temple in Hamm, and the second largest Hindu temple in Europe after the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in London . It is named after the deity Ganesha .

The landmark of the temple is to be a 17 meter high, richly decorated tower. The construction costs of almost one million euros are to be financed exclusively through donations. The approximately 1,300 m² site of the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple is located on the northeast corner of the Hasenheide Volkspark (on Hasenheide Street, directly adjacent to the “ New World ” site) in the Neukölln district . Between the district office of Neukölln and the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple e. V. has a long-term lease until 2080.

Religious ceremonies and prayers are already taking place daily on the property in a former open-air gym that was set up for this purpose. It will serve the members of the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple e. V. and other interested parties as a place of prayer. An intercultural meeting place is to be built next to the temple, which will serve the dialogue between the different cultures and religions of Berlin.

Building history

According to initial plans in 2005, construction was scheduled to start in late 2007 and the temple should be completed in 2010. The first laying of the foundation stone took place on November 4, 2007, without construction beginning after that. When the building permit was granted in 2010, a second foundation stone was laid in September 2010. Later, September 2011 was targeted as the completion date, which could not be achieved due to insufficient donations. The foundation and pillars for the portal of the King's Tower (Raja Gopuram) could only be built in 2012. In 2013, however, the building permit expired and a new application had to be made.

In May 2014 the Berlin press reported that Vilwanathan Krishnamurty from the board of directors of the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple Association said in an interview that nobody knew when the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple would be ready. "I hope we see it before we die". It is customary for temples to be built "one by one," which can take 20 years. “That is decided by the gods alone,” says Krishnamurty. In March 2017, the shell of the tower was still completed and scaffolded.
