future

On June 22nd, 2018, the planning and environmental committee of the city of Dormagen presented the leisure and local recreation concept of the planning office Land Germany for the Straberger-Nievenheimer See. The concept envisages that the lake will be converted into a local recreation area with a historical circular path, lake stage and nature protection zones after the gravel dredging is completed in 2042.

Caiman Sammy

In the summer of 1994, the quarry pond gained national fame when a swimmer brought his spectacled caiman called Sammy, who was kept as a pet . The caiman detached itself from a dog leash while swimming and could only be caught again after searching for days. After this excursion, Sammy lived in the Falkenstein zoo from 1994 to 1997 and from 1998 to 2006 . In February 1997 it was reassigned to its original owner before the Düsseldorf District Court. In 1998 the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court finally prohibited keeping the animal. In 2006, Sammy was 1.50 m long and had to be handed in from the Falkenstein zoo for safety reasons and has since been in its own enclosure on an "Alligator Action Farm" in Friedberg - Ockstadt in Hesse . He died in August 2013.

In 1995 Wolfgang König and Veronika te Reh wrote a musical about Sammy's outbreak and search.
