history

Ancient and Middle Ages

Nievenheim was already settled in prehistoric times. Finds from the Iron Age prove this . In 1973 a Roman villa was excavated and three Roman consecration stones were also found in the former office of Nievenheim. In the year 476 Germanic Franks took possession of the left Lower Rhine. Nievenheim, then still Niuanhem, became the capital of the Frankengau. Another name for Nievenheim is Nievering , which means the side of the Rhine.

The Gau Nievenheim was mentioned in a document as early as 790 . In 1262 Nievenheim became a pastor. Nievenheim was mentioned in a document from 1297. In this the knight "Gottfried von Nivenheim" vouches with "500 Marks per year and day" for the transfer of the Kelzenberger Hof at "Nivenheim" by Hermann von Kothusen to the Poor Clares in Neuss. The certificate, along with three others, was sealed by Friedrich von Helpenheim, Canon of Cologne.

Ückerath existed since 1197 and, according to a document from 1319, belonged to the Fronhof in Eppinghoven.

Modern times

In 1559 the miraculous image of the divine Salvator Mundi reached Nievenheim from the Salvatorkirche Duisburg .

In 1741 the parish church of St. Pankratius was built. The foundation stone for the church was laid by Pastor Krosch on March 20, 1739. Until 1794 Nievenheim belonged to the Electoral Cologne Office of Hülchrath . In 1815 the mayor's office Nievenheim was formed from the communities of Nievenheim - with the places Ückerath, Delrath and Straberg - with the places Straberg and Knechtstedten.

In 1840 the tower of the parish church was raised.

In 1911 the industrial railway Nievenheim-Zons was founded.

In 1927 the Nievenheim mayor's office was renamed to the Nievenheim office . In 1870 the Gohr community changed from the mayor's office in Nettesheim to the mayor's office in Nievenheim.

In 1937 the municipality of Broich, Amt Evinghoven , was incorporated into the municipality of Gohr .

In May 1955, the Protestant Kreuzkirche on Bismarckstrasse was put into service. On June 30, 1974 the Nievenheim office had 11,669 inhabitants on 37.02 km². In the early 1970s there were considerations to merge the offices of Nievenheim and Norf into one community in order to avoid incorporation into Dormagen and Neuss , but this failed. The Nievenheim office was dissolved.

Since January 1st, 1975 Nievenheim, which was independent until then, belongs to Dormagen.

The parish church of St. Pankratius is of particular importance . It is a three-aisled brick hall church. Hermann von Alffter , a bell founder from Alfter near Bonn in the 15th century , created a bell for the parish church in Nievenheim in 1478. There are three ornate baroque altars in the church that were designed by Johann Conrad Schlaun . The carving work was carried out by Christoph Mannskirchen from Münster, the carpentry work by Aegidius Rheindorf from Cologne. The right side altar was donated by Johann Conrad Schlaun and his wife. In front of the church there is an eight-sided chapel, which was built in 1805. The church square is enclosed by a wall that contains the stations of the cross. The stations were donated by Pastor Rumpens and consecrated in 1891.

recreation

In summer there is also the possibility to swim in the Straberg-Nievenheimer See (between Nievenheim and Straberg). The lake gained national fame in July 1994 when the caiman named Sammy , a few months old cub, escaped from its owner, who was bathing at the lake, after it had freed itself from its dog leash. Attempts were made for days to get the animal out of the lake, which was finally achieved on July 10, 1994 by a star contingent of experienced big game hunters with the help of a fish quiver. In the Cologne Aquarium, where Sammy was initially housed, the visitors jostled. Sammy then recovered for a few years in the Falkenstein zoo in Vogtland . He then lived on an alligator farm in Hesse, where he died in August 2013.
