The Falkenstein Zoo was founded in 1953 under the name of Station for Young Researchers . It is a year-round open zoo in the city of Falkenstein / Vogtl. on a total of 1.80 hectares .

Livestock

The animal population is 188 animals in 61 species. 77 animals of 39 species live in a separate tropical house, which was opened in 1997. The population includes common marmosets , red-faced macaques , prairie dogs and Egyptian bats . There is also a kangaroo enclosure on the premises. The largest enclosure is the brown bear enclosure . Porcupines , maras , emus , llamas , donkeys and ponies still live in the zoo . There is also a petting zoo with goats .

The zoo became known nationwide through the spectacle caiman Sammy . The crocodile tore itself off its leash while bathing with its owner at Straberg-Nievenheimer See in Dormagen in 1994 and caused a stir for days. After his escape, Sammy lived in the tropical house of the Falkenstein zoo until 2006.
