economy

The villages of the former Nievenheim office were initially geared towards agriculture. The first industrial attempt was made in 1811 when a sugar factory was built in Knechtstedten. This company had to stop production after a few years. In 1856 the Nievenheim station was opened on the Cologne-Neuss railway line built in 1855. In 1908 Nievenheim was connected to the electrical network. In 1911, the Zons-Nievenheim GmbH industrial railway was founded and with it the development of the Zonser- and Delrather Heide industrial park. The largest subscriber to the Zons-Nievenheim GmbH industrial railway was the Nievenheim zinc smelter, founded in 1913. In 1970 the company was closed. In 1971 it was found that both the soil and the groundwater of the former smelter site were heavily contaminated. After further investigations, the area was fenced in in 1985. In 1971 the company Schrott-Schack settled on the site of the former Nagelschmitt stoneware factory in the south of Nievenheim. This had to declare bankruptcy in 1982. Large deposits of waste oil were found on the site, so this site also had to be cordoned off. As early as 1962, the regional products store Gebr. Schillings was opened on the site opposite the former stoneware works (clay factory) Nievenheim.
