St. Pankratius (Nievenheim)
St. Pankratius is the Roman Catholic parish church of Nievenheim , a district of Dormagen in the Rhine district of Neuss . Basically it goes back to the 12th century.
history
Nievenheim was mentioned in documents from the Werden Abbey as early as 796 . St. Pankratius itself was mentioned as a parish church for the first time in 1262, but the Romanesque west tower still existing today indicates that the church is older, as it is dated to the 12th century. The three lower floors of the tower are made of tuff , a fourth floor made of brick with pointed arched windows was probably added in the 15th century. The lowest storey is not structured, in the second and third it has two round-arched panels on each side and in the third walled-up window.
In 1557 the church came into the possession of a Salvator figure, which had previously been in the Duisburg Salvatorkirche and had been removed there in the course of the Reformation . This image of grace is venerated to this day in Nievenheim as part of a Salvator octave. The attraction of the figure for pilgrims led to the decision to build a new, larger church in the 18th century. This was built from 1741 to 1743 as a baroque three-aisled hall church while retaining the tower. The tower has a tower from 1840.
