The Chisti ( Rhaeto-Romanic for castle, also tower) is a medieval residential tower on the southern edge of the village Lumbrein in the Val Lumnezia in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .

history

According to dendrochronological studies, the residential tower was built around 1316, presumably over the walls of a previous building. The actual living area of the building is protected in the north by a massive shield wall. A ditch to the north and the village has long been leveled. The tower is covered with a pent roof sloping towards the south. On the east side there is a high entrance on the 3rd and 4th floors ; the original iron door of the lower entrance is still preserved.

The medieval wooden porch in front of the entrances can be reached from the north via a staircase on a brick base. Narrow notches and arched windows with tuff walls can be found on all sides. The larger window and door openings are from post-medieval reconstructions. The upper floors of the southern part were rebuilt using knitted construction after partial destruction in the 19th century .

The tower was probably the ancestral seat of the Lords of Lumerins . It has been owned by the Capaul family since at least the middle of the 16th century and is still inhabited. Inside there are original beamed ceilings as well as late Gothic carved fragments of paneling with the arms of the Werdenbergs and Brandis from the end of the 15th / beginning of the 16th century.

From 1969–70 the building was extensively restored by Peter Zumthor .
