criticism

At Allmusic the album received 3.5 out of 5 stars. Ned Raggett wrote that while the album wasn't as strong as the debut, a-ha, still marketed as a "nice guys band", had had success with it. The two opening pieces alone are among the strongest there is. On Laut.de the album was described in 2012 as a “milestone” and “sublime world of melancholy” and received the maximum number of points.

The Rolling Stone awarded for the deluxe version 5 of 5 stars and wrote: "After the strong I've Been Losing You just proved the other two single releases from Scoundrel Days as the weaker songs on the record. Cry Wolf squinted with his synth fanfare chorus so typical of the eighties, perhaps a tad too much on the dance floor. Manhattan Skyline was less irritating because of the change in mood in the chorus (...) than because of the involuntarily comical attempt to answer Harket's exclamation "You Know!" to demonstrate hardness with guitar and keyboard. "
