Geographical location

Delhoven is located in the western urban area of Dormagen and is delimited on the eastern side towards Dormagen city center by the Tannenbusch Wildlife Park , a wooded local recreation area with a zoo. Around the zoo there is a 2.5 km long jogging or walking fitness trail with various exercises. Another green area is the Tannenbusch geo-park with rock exhibits and two still waters. The fir bush is a former Rhine dune , which until 1974 consisted of a few scattered forest parcels, a heather , wasteland and low-quality arable parcels. The southern border is formed by the Knechtstedener Wald , in which a bridle path has been set up.

Place name sign for Blechhof

The village of Blechhof is located in the south of Delhovens, originally a gardening settlement that has consisted of 28 nurseries since the 1960s. Today, however, only a few companies are still active. There are also numerous farms around Delhoven, some of which have farm shops.

The place Delhoven was built on the edge of the former arm of the Rhine ( Pletschbach / Sasser Schepp ).

history

From the first mention to the end of the 18th century

Delhoven was first mentioned as Dalhoven in 1248 and 1280 . This means something like 'Talhof' or 'Hof im Tal'. Today's Delrath district in the north has a similar place name . In the 13th century the place consisted of at least three courtyards: the Fronhof of the Knechtsteden monastery , the Diepringhof and the Pilkenbuschhof. In 1616 the name Delve or Delffen appeared. In 1657 the name Delhoven was used as a family name for the first time, alternatively as "von Delven" or "von Delffen". In 1670 Delhoven belonged to the subordinate rule Hackenbroich . 1706 belonged to the Fronhofverband of the Knechtsteden monastery numerous goods in Dormagen, Horrem, Nievenheim and Delhoven. Knechtsteden Monastery also owned leased land in Delhoven. In 1794 the place Delhoven was occupied by French hussars . Some residents took advantage of the hour to loot the monastery three kilometers away. In 1796 Delhoven was assigned to the new canton of Dormagen in the Arrondissement Cologne of the Département de la Roer .

In 1797 a cattle epidemic was rampant that killed almost all farm animals on the western bank of the Rhine, with the exception of the animals in Delhoven.

New affiliation, natural disaster, main occupation

In 1815 Delhoven became Prussian. The municipality of Hackenbroich was created, to which Delhoven now belonged. This in turn belonged to the mayor's office in Dormagen in the Neuss district . In 1825 the first school was founded in Delhoven. In 1836 the place was still very agriculturally oriented, at that time there were 38 horses, 6 colts, 16 oxen, 199 cows, 65 calves, 69 goats and 126 pigs in Delhoven. In 1827 an incendiary fire station was built next to the new school. In March 1876 a storm swept across Delhoven with strength unknown to the residents of the place. In doing so, he uprooted thousands of trees in the fir bush.

Renaming and later administrative reorganization from the 20th century

In 1927 the mayor's office in Dormagen, to which Delhoven also belonged, was renamed to Amt Dormagen. In March 1945 the American army entered Delhoven. When the German soldiers withdrew, there was no major damage. In 1946 the fields around Delhoven were ravaged by the potato beetle plague. The schoolchildren searched the fields with the teachers. In July 1969 the Dormagen office was dissolved and Delhoven became a district of the city of Dormagen.

Mayor

Josef Steins 1883 -?; In 1908 he celebrated his 25 years as the mayor of the community of Hackenbroich and mayor of the town of Delhoven. Josef-Steins-Straße in Delhoven was named after him.

Village coat of arms

The left half of the coat of arms is decorated with the Hackenbroich lion (black lion on a gold background). On the green background of the right half there is a mill and a fir tree. These two symbols are divided horizontally by a wavy bar that represents the Pletschbach. The mill is a symbol of the early settlement of the area. It is already mentioned on the map of the Cologne surveyor Ehmanns in the 18th century , but is probably older. Today the mill no longer exists. The street Im Mühlenend points to its former location. The fir is a heraldic figure with different symbolic content. On the one hand, the evergreen fir is a symbol of loyalty and persistence, on the other hand, it indicates a wooded area.
