The station Houten is a through station in the Dutch town of Houten in the Utrecht-Boxtel railway . The train station is in the center of Houten, which in turn is only a few kilometers south of Utrecht ; this means that the station is heavily used by commuters.

history

The first station in Houten was opened on November 1, 1868 with the railway line from Utrecht to Boxtel . However, this station was closed in 1935. In view of the fact that Houten's growth grew faster than average in the 1970s, the station should be rebuilt at a different location. The new station opened on May 23, 1982 and is located on a viaduct . Between January 2001 and December 2008, Houten had the shortest tram in Europe ( tram line Houten - Houten Castellum ). The 1.9 km long route ran parallel to the railway line and connected Houten with the southern district of Houten-Zuid. Since it was not possible to build a stop for trains on the existing railway line, a special track for the tram was laid in parallel. Two TW 6000s acquired second-hand from the Hanover city railway were used as vehicles . The line was only planned temporarily and should be an anticipation of the planned doubling of the track.
