The railway line Utrecht – Boxtel also Staatslijn H is a railway line between Utrecht and Boxtel . The railway line is the most important north-south railway line in the center of the Netherlands . The length of the route is about 60 kilometers.

history

On January 1, 1868, the first section between Vught and Boxtel was opened. The section between Utrecht and Hedel followed on November 1, 1868, as did the section 's-Hertogenbosch – Vught. The last section between Hedel and 's-Hertogenbosch was inaugurated on September 14, 1870. The line runs over three larger rivers, the bridge over the Lek was opened in 1868, followed by the bridge over the Waal in 1870 and over the Maas in the same year . When it opened, the bridge over the Lek was the longest bridge in Europe.

From 2001 to 2008 the Houten light rail ran parallel to the railway line, which opened up the Houten district of Castellum as a temporary measure. Since the railway line was only expanded to two tracks, no further stop could be set up for the regional trains. Since the four-track expansion of the railway line in Houten was completed in 2010, the trains have been able to stop at Houten Castellum station. The light rail was therefore shut down in 2008 to enable the expansion.

Train traffic

Intercity trains currently run the entire route from Den Helder via Alkmaar in Maastricht as well as from Schiphol Airport in Venlo and from Enkhuizen in Heerlen . The InterCity line from Zwolle to Roosendaal only travels a short stretch of the route near 's-Hertogenbosch. In addition, the regional trains ( Sprinter ) from Utrecht Centraal in Geldermalsen , Tiel , 's-Hertogenbosch, and from Arnhem Centraal via' s-Hertogenbosch and Tilburg in Dordrecht run parts of the route. There are also regional trains from Oss in the direction of Deurne .
