The Heerlen station is the largest station in the Dutch city of Heerlen . It is located on the Sittard – Herzogenrath railway line , is the separation station for the Heerlen – Schin op Geul railway line and a central hub in urban public transport . National regional and long-distance trains as well as cross-border trains in the direction of Herzogenrath run from the station .
history
The station was opened on May 1, 1896 with the Sittard – Herzogenrath railway line. The connection to Schin op Geul and thus to the line to Maastricht that had existed since 1853 followed in 1915. The station was an important transshipment station for the mining industry until the mines were closed. From Heerlen you can travel to Aachen and some other border cities in Germany.
The first reception building was where the Heerlen police office is today (Stationsstraat 13e). In 1913 it was replaced in its function by a second building directly to the west and from then on served as a staff building. The architect of the new building was possibly George van Heukelom, who was designing other station buildings along the route to Schin op Geul at the time. The new entrance building was visually dominated by a centrally placed, square tower with a clock , the corners of which had a bevel in the upper area . The tower was made of red-brown brick and decorated with contrasting yellow stones. A pointed roof made of slate formed the end , which was later replaced by reddish roof tiles . On both sides of the tower there were parts of the building in classic proportions with tent roofs and brick risalits . The western part had a pergola-like construction with three arches as a passage to the platform. In the far western wing there was a waiting room , in the basement a hairdressing salon. The actual station building has many decorations with keystones, attachments and cover plates. A loggia with columns and a terrace emphasized the asymmetry. The entire complex of the first and second reception building was demolished in 1985. In the same year, the third station building was built in place of the second reception building.
From 2012 to 2019 the station north was the new district Maankwartier ( German quarter of the moon ). In the course of the construction work, the station was converted into a riding station . The old reception building, completed in 1985 and designed by Hans Bak, gave way to a new building, the design of which, like that of the entire Maankwartier, came from the Heerlen architect Michel Huisman. The construction work was completed in 2019 and the new station went into operation on August 5th of that year.
