World Club Tennis (formerly White Club Tennis) is an international tennis community with 3790 players (as of February 2019). Registered users are offered various functions via an online platform, such as a player search, regular tennis events in various German cities and the option of participating in internal individual leagues. The project received media attention primarily through campaigns in unusual locations, such as tennis on the Zugspitze , Theresienwiese or in the Olympic ice sports center in Munich. In the September 2018 edition, the tennis magazine World Club named tennis as Germany's largest virtual club.

Emergence

The World Club Tennis project was started in 2015 by Christoph Hanke and Peter Wehner in Munich . According to the founders, the aim of the project is to get more people excited about tennis and to make the sport easily accessible regardless of club membership. Among other things, the establishment of leisure leagues in cities and organized open tennis events are intended to break down barriers to entry in tennis. While the project included just over 400 players at the beginning of 2016, over 3700 tennis players were registered at the beginning of 2019. International campaigns with professional tennis players such as Gaël Monfils in Paris or Gilles Müller in Lisbon made World Club Tennis known beyond Germany's borders.

functionality

The community is organized via an online platform that offers registered users the functions listed below.

Player profile

Adult users can create a player profile on the website. The classification of the skill level is based on the self-assessment of the players. There are 7 categories available, whereby level 1 corresponds to the best possible level. Further information such as club membership, performance class and training frequency can be provided on a voluntary basis.

Player exchange

The player exchange is the platform's internal player search and enables the search for registered tennis players within the same zip code, city or a selected area. Players can be filtered according to their skill level, gender and club membership. The subsequent establishment of contact is made possible by an integrated message tool.

league

Registered users can register for participation in a league via the platform against payment of an entry fee. In contrast to the official media game operation of the tennis associations, this is a single league. Within a league, all players play against each other and arrange their league matches individually. The rules stipulate that the games are counted continuously and a league match ends after 60 minutes. The winner is whoever is in the lead after 60 minutes. The final result is then reported to the platform and converted into points for the league's player ranking. While in Munich there is the possibility of participating in a league that is publicly viewable according to skill level, the league operations in other cities have so far been organized in "private" leagues, which are only viewable for the participating players. In principle, every registered user is free to found their own private league. The league operation is divided into a summer and winter season.

Jour fixe tennis

Jour Fixe Tennis describes a regularly organized joint tennis game for registered players of all levels. Weekly Jour Fixe Tennis has so far been held in selected cities such as Munich and Berlin . Registration for Jour Fixe appointments is made via the platform for a fee.

Urban tennis

This category includes tennis events organized by World Club Tennis in unusual locations. In Germany, World Club Tennis played on the Zugspitze , in the Munich Olympic Stadium , in the Olympic Ice Sports Center , on the Großhesseloher Bridge and on the Türkenstrasse in Munich. In addition, two actions took place at the Kloiber GmbH container depot in Munich-Riem and an event in Hamburg . Outside of Germany, there have been urban tennis campaigns in New York City , Paris and Lisbon so far .
