Freida Lee Mock is an American screenwriter , director and film producer .

Life

Mock studied history and law at the University of California at Berkeley . After her bachelor's degree , she worked for the National Geographic Channel, among others . In 1983 she was nominated for an Oscar for the first time for the documentary To Live Or Let Die produced for the television station PBS . In 1989 she received the Emmy for the portrait of the actress Lillian Gish , Lillian Gish: The Actor's Life for Me . A second nomination for an Oscar came in 1991 for the portrait of Rose Kennedy , Rose Kennedy: A Life To Remember . She finally received the Oscar in 1995 for Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision , a film about the artist and architect Maya Ying Lin . She received other Oscar nominations for Never Give Up: The 20th Century Odyssey of Herbert Zipper , a portrait of Herbert Zipper, and for Sing! , a documentary about a children's choir in Los Angeles .

Together with Terry Sanders she founded the American Film Foundation and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America . She speaks Chinese and French .
