Life

He grew up under the care of his parents Johann Christof Georg Dorfmeister (1705–1789) and Elisabeth Josefa, geb. Millner in Vienna and was the fourth of five children. His older brother (the first child) was Stephan Dorfmeister , a painter of the Austrian late baroque. In 1754, at the age of eighteen, he became an apprentice to his brother-in-law, the sculptor JG Leithner. During this time he attended the Vienna Academy in the evenings, where he trained primarily in sculpture and bossir art. After completing his apprenticeship, he became a student of Balthasar Ferdinand Moll from 1757 to 1760 , who taught him metalwork. In 1765 Dorfmeister became a member of the academy, but did not receive a professorship himself.

In 1922 Dorfmeistergasse in Vienna- Meidling was named after the artist.

meaning

Johann Georg Dorfmeister was one of the most important sculptors in Austria in the second half of the 18th century. Originally influenced by Georg Raphael Donner , due to the competition from Franz Anton von Zauner and Johann Fischer, he partially adapted to the new style of classicism, but without really breaking away from the baroque. After he had worked on a memorial on the occasion of the marriage of Emperor Joseph II to Maria Isabella of Parma in 1760 , he was frequently employed in the following. Dorfmeister primarily created sculptures for churches, but also building sculptures for the courtyard. Works by him can be found in the Dominican Church , the Laimgruben and Mariahilfer Church , the Barnabite Monastery , the Court Library, the Theresianum and the Palais Esterházy (all in Vienna) as well as the Maria Taferl pilgrimage church in Lower Austria.
