Alois Hildwein (born February 5, 1789 (baptism) in Vienna , † December 2, 1828 in Vienna) was a builder and architect of the Viennese Biedermeier period , who was mainly active in inner-city, bourgeois residential construction during the Vormärz period .

Life

Alois Hildwein was born in Vienna in 1789 as the eldest son of bricklayer foreman and master builder Adam Hildwein (1759–1833). He completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in his father's company and probably spent his journeyman years there . Hildwein completed his masterpiece in 1820 and was accepted as a "bourgeois Scottish master builder" in the Viennese building and masonry guild . In 1823 he married Magdalena Müller, who came from Upper Austria . With her he had four daughters and a son who, however, died in childhood. Alois Hildwein himself died young, at the age of 39, of tracheal tuberculosis . His youngest daughter was not born until after his death in 1829. After Alois Hildwein's early death, his father Adam continued his business. As a result, the young master builder Anton Grünn took over the business and continued to run it with Magdalena Hildwein until after 1850 as a so-called widow business .

Between 1823 and 1827, 26 new buildings and conversions are evidence of Alois Hildwein's intensive work and the brisk, private residential construction activity in Vienna during these years. For some clients, Hildwein designed entire rows of houses, such as in Franzens- and Krongasse in Vienna-Margareten . Mainly three- story apartment buildings were built , which were divided into small residential units, consisted of a room, kitchen and cabinet, and the upper floors were mostly accessible via Pawlatschen . The architecture historical significance Hildweins is measured primarily by its ability "for the then common classification scheme of the facades with the great variety of forms of his time to find ever new variations."
