Austrian art topography

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian Art Topography (ÖKT) is a series of books published by the Austrian Federal Monuments Office since 1907, which presents the inventory of art monuments in Austria.

history

On the basis of a “Highest Resolution” signed by Emperor Franz Joseph I on January 1st, 1850 , the “ kk Central Commission for the Research and Preservation of Architectural Monuments ” was founded and started work in 1853.

In 1906, under Max Dvořák, the preparatory work for the book series on Austrian Art Topography began , the first volume of which ( The Monuments of the Political District of Krems ) was published in 1907.

Heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este took over the protectorate in 1910 through the institution that had meanwhile been renamed " kk Central Commission for Monument Preservation ". His adviser Carl von Bardolff criticized the drafting of the art topography as too slow (according to his statements, seven of an estimated 370 volumes were finished in 1913), too expensive to produce (with around 25,000 kroner per volume, total costs of around nine million kroner were expected) and too unwieldy for the practical use of the individual volumes.

Bardolff's argument, however, was incorrect. Ten volumes had already appeared by 1913, and there was no plan to cover the entire cisleithan half of the empire. It was planned to focus on regions that were particularly interesting from the point of view of monument preservation.

Since Franz Ferdinand was particularly interested in what was then the Crown Land of Salzburg, the Duchy of Salzburg was described in terms of art topography in seven volumes between 1911 and 1914 at his request . In 1940 the last volume concerning Salzburg was published.

With the 1039 pages and 1185 illustrations volume Die Kunstdenkmäler der Stadt Graz. The secular buildings of the II., III. and VI. District appeared the 60th in 2013 and until further notice last band of the Austrian art topography. This completes the art-topographical inventory of the secular buildings of the historical core of the city of Graz.

As is repeatedly mentioned with gratitude in the foreword of individual volumes, some volumes were subsidized by cities, monasteries or patrons, above all to enable richer illustration. For example, Max Dvořák thanks in the foreword to Volume XIV ( building history of the Imperial and Royal Hofburg in Vienna up to the 19th centuries ) for an munificant subsidy by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Even in the present day, the Federal Monuments Office is repeatedly supported by the respective federal states and / or Cities supported.

A similar series of books was planned for both the Bohemian countries and Galicia ; it was realized for South Tyrol in the years 1923–30 by Josef Weingartner .

The two volumes 28 and 29 published in Austria during the Nazi regime were published under the title Ostmärkische Kunsttopographie .

meaning

The Austrian art topography is a scientifically developed inventory of art monuments in Austria. It is therefore a basis for activities in the areas of monument preservation, urban planning and old town preservation, but is also important for art history.
