Paul Buberl

Paul Buberl (born May 29, 1883 in Franzensbad , Bohemia , † July 10, 1942 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian .

Paul Buberl was the son of the hotelier Wilhelm Buberl. From 1902 he studied art history at the University of Vienna , especially with Franz Wickhoff . From 1905 to 1907 he was a member of the Austrian Institute for Historical Research and received his doctorate in 1907 with his thesis The monumental painting of the early Middle Ages in Austria . He then joined the Kk Central Commission for Monument Preservation as secretary, and in 1914 he became general curator for the German-speaking parts of Austria. In 1920 he became director of the art department of the Dorotheum auction house in Vienna.

Buberl published mainly on Byzantine and medieval book illumination as well as several volumes of Austrian art topography .
