Jakomini is the 6th district of Graz . Its name goes back to Kaspar Andreas Ritter von Jacomini .
history
Kaspar Andreas Ritter von Jacomini took advantage of the unique opportunity and in 1784 bought most of the land south of the Iron Gate, in other words where the “Jakomini” district extends today. An imperial resolution in 1782 triggered the abandonment of the city fortifications and the sale of the fortress grounds.
He sold the land he had acquired, allegedly cheaply, to various citizens of Graz, imposing the condition that they be built over. So in the years up to 1820 the "Jakomini suburb" was created. Some of the petty bourgeois buildings and narrow streets that were built at the time are still preserved today.
December 1, 1900 from the II. District Jakomini of II. District Leonhard separated and Jakomini as VI. New city district created. On the same occasion, various streets and parts of the square were ceded from the previous second district to the first district .
The historic fort courtyard was demolished in 2010.
Culture and sights
- The Josefskirche is located on the Schönau belt and can be reached by tram number 5. The construction of the church, which was built in the style of historicism , was very controversial and at the same time a declaration of war against the Los-von-Rom movement . The so-called Jubilee Church commemorates the 60th anniversary of the priesthood of Pope Leo XIII. , on the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I and on the 300th anniversary of the restoration of the Catholic religion in Styria.
- The modern building of the Münzgrabenkirche can be reached by tram line 6. It is located on Münzgrabenstrasse. The predecessor church of the Münzgrabenkirche, the Church of St. Anna, which was destroyed in the Second World War, was the place of activity of the preacher and writer Abraham a Sancta Clara for six years . The little Anna chapel reminds of the old church building.
- The Seifenfabrik event center is located on the site of the former Graz soap factory on the left bank of the Mur. The facility was built in 1872, revitalized in 2003 and adapted as an event center. The soap factory can be reached via Fröhlichgasse.
