The Graz autumn fair is organized annually by Messe Congress Graz Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (MCG) and took place for the first time in 1906. In addition to the different thematic focuses of the exhibitions across all industries that offer capital and consumer goods , there is also a large amusement park (formerly: Messe-Prater ). The number of visitors is around 70,000, with more than 450 exhibitors offering their products and services . The exhibition grounds are located in the 6th Jakomini district of Graz between Conrad-von-Hötzendorf-Strasse (main entrance) and Münzgrabenstrasse ( Messe-Schlössl ).

history

On September 29, 1906, in the industrial hall built in 1880 (location: today's exhibition grounds, Grazer Stadthalle ), the large-scale Graz Autumn Fair, planned since 1905 and sponsored by an association from May 2, 1906, was carried out by Manfred von Clary and Aldringen ( 1852–1928), kk governor of Styria, opened. In keeping with the successful occasion - the fair attracted 260,000 visitors over nine days - Eduard Wagnes (1863–1936) composed the great potpourrie A visit to the Graz autumn fair .

The Graz trade fair concept, designed primarily and implemented from which Brno native Rudolf Reidl , head of the publicity department of the Grazer Tagblatt , was Reidl, who soon retired after the Autumn Fair from their organizers club and a private Organista Publications Bureau carried on logged, : In May 1907 the first local spring fair took place in Brno , which could not compete spatially with Graz and its industrial hall, but was successful. In addition to the commercial focus of the autumn fair, Reidl also played a decisive role in the associated entertainment program: In the park surrounding the industrial hall, he operated a wooden toboggan run , which led to the establishment of his own company, and a toboggan run made on their behalf , the sample of which was published in March It was presented in 1907 at Crystal Palace , London . The autumn fair 1906 lacked exhibition space despite the spacious industrial hall. For 1907, parts of the adjacent trotting track (opened on May 25, 1885) were rented and additional temporary construction work was planned for the industrial hall park.

The historically most significant event in the entertainment program for the Graz Autumn Fair took place on September 26, 1909, when the sons of the artist Franz Renner (1866–1912), Anatol and Alexander (see: Renner-Buben ), for the first time ascended and landed a ( 37 meter long) steerable airship, Renner Estaric Steering Balloon I , and greatly increased the prevailing interest in aviation at the time. In addition to the flight action (repeated several times), another fair attraction in 1909 was the championship of the Austrian wrestlers .

After the First World War could (most recently in 1913 held) Fair 1921 again take place realigned as a pattern and fabric inspection for Styrian producers and connected to a home thinking , among other things, to the end of the exhibition on October 2, a altsteirisches costume festival on Schloss Eggenberg envisaged . In the following years the fair developed into a real folk festival. The focus was on themed halls for: food, wine, tourism, milk, inventors and beer. In 1928 there was a special exhibition for the first time at the autumn fair: on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the state capital, an “energy industry exhibition” was shown.

Innovation and pleasure were already at the core of the trade fair at that time. In the open air area, the amusement park developed into the center of trade fair entertainment, while in the hall area the “Konrad” school glider was used to advertise aviation, which was still adventurous at the time.

There was no autumn fair from 1939 to 1947. During the war years, part of the building, including the industrial hall, was destroyed

Around 1960 the Graz trade fair was able to fully develop its internationality. Visitors as well as exhibitors came from Germany, Italy, Yugoslavia and the Balkan states. This development also made it necessary to professionalise the organizational structures, and in addition to its role as an economic platform, the fair also became a link in European international understanding.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Graz trade fair was inundated with visitors. Hundreds of exhibitors showed their new products and from toys to household appliances and textiles you could see the latest achievements of consumer society.

In the 1980s, trade fair concepts developed into specialist trade fairs. The amusement park became a party mile and the Graz trade fair increasingly became a gastronomic and social event.

In the 1990s, the classic public fairs gradually recorded a decline in visitors, which resulted in the development of new specialist theme concepts. A time of radical change was just around the corner. The spectrum of discussions ranged from the construction of a new town hall to the complete evacuation from the urban area. The new millennium brought about the construction of the Graz City Hall and Hall A for the Messe Congress Graz
