List of the city districts of Graz
Graz is the capital of the second largest Austrian state of Styria (see also: List of political districts in Styria ). The urban area of Graz is divided into 17 districts. The city river Mur runs straight through the city from north to south . Unlike in Vienna, the districts in Graz are not referred to by their number but by their name in everyday language. In the street signs, however, both can be found in the header, the district numbers are given in Roman numerals . Each district has its own street signs, but the design is uniform.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the city was first divided into quarters with a corresponding boundary, then from 1850 into districts .
In 1869, the 15 quarters of Burg, Landhaus, Joanneum, Jakomini, Grazbach, Schörgelgasse, St. Leonhard, Geidorf, Graben, Kalvarie, Lend, Maria Hilf, Elisabeth, Gries and Karlau , which had existed until then, became the five districts of I. City, II Jakomini, III. Geidorf, IV. Lend and V. Gries summarized.
In 1873 the city finally got its name, until then the city was still called Grätz . At the city limits of the four outlying districts there were 24 line offices where tolls were collected.
After the "annexation" of Austria to the German Reich in 1938, numerous incorporations of today's outlying districts followed
-
Greater Graz :
- Liebenau
- St. Peter
- Waltendorf
- Mariatrost (as a supplement to Geidorf )
- Semolina
- Andritz (as Graz Nord )
- Gösting
- Eggenberg
- Wetzelsdorf
- Straßgang (as a common district with the later independent Puntigam )
The line offices were completely abolished.
After the Second World War , the current city and district boundaries and, in some cases, new district names were established by the Graz municipal council in 1946. For example, Mariatrost and Geidorf were separated and independent districts; Graz North was renamed Andritz .
In 1988, Puntigam was finally separated from Straßgang .
Until 2008, each district had its own district office, after which a start was made to combine several district administrations in 6 service points, starting with St. Leonhard, Geidorf and Ries in a new building at the LKH in Stiftingtalstrasse.
The largest district in terms of area of the city is Andritz in the north of the city, the smallest is the central district of Innere Stadt . The fourth smallest district Jakomini is the most populous, while the inner city has the least .
In Graz, in contrast to Vienna, the city districts are rarely referred to with their respective numbers in everyday language. Thus, for example, one speaks of "Geidorf" and not the "3. District ", the only exception to this rule is the inner city, which is also known as" 1. District "is designated. The fact that the numbers of the districts receive little attention is also reflected in the fact that they are not given in Arabic but in Roman numbers on street signs or official documents.
