Grazer SC

The Gruabn [ gʁuaɱ ] (pit), also Sturm place is a sports facility in Graz District Jakomini that primarily football is used. The stadium became legendary as the long-standing home of the three-time Austrian soccer champions SK Sturm Graz between 1919 and 1997. The entrance is on Karl-Maria-von-Weber-Gasse, a back entrance on Kastellfeldgasse.

history

In 1919, Dr. Karl Assmann took over the management of Sturm Graz and leased the monastery meadow in Graz. Some time later, the Gruabn was opened on the bottom of the Klosterwiese with a 14-0 victory by Sturm against the SAK in 1914. In 1920 the first renovation was carried out and the grandstand was built. In March 1934 the covered grandstand was built. 15 years later the clubhouse was built, which became known as the "Knusperhäuschen". After years of renovation, the Gruabn was reopened in October 1982 thanks to the then Sturm-President Franz Gady and Heinz Hochstrasser. The first game in the renovated facility was the game Sturm Graz against Eisenstadt (4-0).

Little by little, other additions were made, such as the small electronic match clock, a VIP club and a new player leaving . The training ground has been converted into a parking lot. In 1995 a floodlight system was put into operation. On May 31, 1997, after 78 years, Sturm finally said goodbye to the Gruabn with a 3-0 win over Rapid Vienna.

Since then, SK Sturm has played its home games in the Liebenauer Stadium, which opened in 1997 (then Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium, now Merkur Arena). In 2005 SK Sturm had to sell its usage rights to the Gruabn to the city of Graz due to financial problems .

The Gruabn is now mainly used by Grazer SC .

Initiative for the preservation of the Gruabn wooden grandstand

The non-profit association of SK Sturm Graz supporters was founded in autumn 2016 , as the wooden grandstand is in danger of collapsing and is now about to end. It is to be demolished and therefore the committed team around the project is fighting with donations and the help of SK Sturm Graz to preserve the grandstand. One crowdfunding initiative has already significantly exceeded its minimum target of 50,000 euros. (As of May 4, 2017)
