Adam Hildwein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adam Hildwein (* 1759 in Bischofteinitz , Bohemia ; † March 10, 1833 in Leopoldstadt , today in Vienna ) was an Austrian master builder .

Life

Adam Hildwein was the son of a carpenter from South Bohemia. What training he received and when he came to Vienna is unknown. When he married for the first time in 1786, he was a bricklayer. From this marriage came four children, including the future city architect Alois Hildwein .

Hildwein initially had difficulties getting admitted as a master due to the restrictive policy of the building and stonemasons' guild. One attempt failed in 1795 when he was a mason foreman in Juliane Hild's widow's business, where Johann Georg Kornhäusel was a master, and another when he wanted to succeed the late builder Andreas Zach . In 1798 this succeeded and he became Zach's successor. In 1800 he received his concession and became a member of the building and masonry cooperative.

In possession of the city architect's license, Hildwein developed a lively construction activity in Vienna and its suburbs in the following thirty years. In 1817 his wife died, from whom he had been judicially separated since 1797. He married again in 1827; two more children followed from this marriage. In 1829 he also took over the master's position for his late son Alois. Hildwein died of old age in 1833 and was buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof . His wife successfully continued the company as a widow's business.

Franziskanerplatz 3 (1802)

Adam Hildwein was a very busy master builder during the pre-March period . He mainly devoted himself to residential construction, for which there was great demand in those years. He carried out renovations and extensions, additions and new buildings. He often built according to his own designs. The rental houses were mainly geared towards functionality, the facade decoration was symmetrical and could be more or less emphasized as required. Many of the buildings that have been preserved were subsequently changed, so that very few houses still show their original condition.
