Josef Kastan (born March 3, 1795 in Weiher in Bodenbach, reign of Tetschen , Bohemia ; † August 21, 1861 in Baden ) was an Austrian master builder .

Life

Josef Kastan was Jewish and the son of master bricklayer Lorenz Kastan. He came from the North Bohemian Bodenbach, today's Podmokly, a district of Děčín. Nothing is known about his youth. In 1822 he is documented as a draftsman in Vienna , who married Josefa Anna Kurz that year, with whom he had seven children. In 1838 he obtained the master builder license, became a citizen of Vienna and joined the building and stonemason cooperative. Since that time Kastan has developed a brisk construction activity in Vienna. He died 66 years ago in Baden, where he has probably stopped for a cure to exhaustion and was on the St. Marx Cemetery buried in Vienna.

His three sons followed their father professionally. Peter Kastan (around 1825–1862) was an architect and town builder, Karl Kastan (1827–1900) was a master stonemason and Josef Kastan junior (1832–1895) was town builder and civil engineer.

The focus of his activity was residential construction in Vienna, where he built many houses according to his own plans in addition to conversions and extensions. It was a matter of simple, sober rental houses, mostly three-story, with simply structured facades, simply framed and suspicious windows and base and end cornices. Buildings that differ from this and are more heavily decorated are rare. All Kastan's buildings correspond to contemporary functional architecture.
