Location description

The church is elevated above the confluence of Apostelgasse and Erdbergstrasse . The center of the village of Erdberg used to be at this point.

history

A small chapel is said to have been located on the site of today's church as early as 1234, but the first documentary mention was not made until 1333. In the course of land foundations and property listings, the chapel is mentioned more frequently in the subsequent period.

On August 7, 1700, the foundation stone was laid for the new building of the chapel, which was destroyed during the Second Turkish Siege (1683). The building, which was originally only intended as a chapel for the dead for the surrounding cemetery, was consecrated to the holy apostles Peter and Paul around 1723. At the request of the population, however, communion on death could be kept here. In 1726 an application was made for an own pastor. In the same year today's high altar was completed. The facade of the church with the two apostles standing at the top of the portal staircase was erected in 1735. In 1749 the building got a new roof. In 1770 the small chapel was expanded, and the triconch choir with the church tower, which still exists today, was built. 1782 the cemetery that surrounded the church was abandoned. The following year the small chapel was elevated to a parish church. The church was painted in 1809 and in 1810 a new high altar painting was donated by Georg Schelling , which depicts the “Farewell of the Apostles Peter and Paul”. Around 1826 there were negotiations to enlarge the church, but most plans were discarded due to the high costs. The permission to enlarge the church was granted on December 22nd, 1831, on June 12th of the following year work began under the direction of the builder Karl Brandtner and with the assistance of the builder Josef Klee . It was originally planned not to change the presbytery , but due to dimensional errors, the vault had to be raised. The church consecration of the present building took place on September 15, 1833. In 1849 the roof structure of the church tower was renewed. In the following year, master builder Josef Kastan added three ground floor rooms south of the sacristy . In 1887, the original straight staircase at the main entrance was expanded into a portal staircase.

The church has been restored several times, around 1926 or most recently in 1985 and 1986.

Exterior

The small, sober, baroque - classicist church is located on a hill above Erdbergstrasse. The building consists of a classical, cubic nave with a gable roof, to which a baroque triconch choir adjoins in the east , which is only slightly curved on the outside. A low church tower rises above it.

The structure of the facade and the side walls is kept flat. At the corners of the building, the facade is divided by wide and smooth bezels , which are connected by a surrounding entablature . The remaining wall surfaces are somewhat deepened with horizontal ashlar plaster . The entrance side is gabled. The rectangular portal and the semi-circular lunette window are flanked on both sides by pilasters . A coffin cornice runs through the ashlar plaster below the semicircular windows on the entrance side and the side walls . There is a side entrance on both side walls. The entablature on the nave extends to the side cones of the chancel. The middle conche, raised by the tower, is slightly lower in line with the original baroque choir. There is a small arched window on each of the lateral cones and two oval window openings on the apse . The church tower rises above the choir by one storey, which is open on all four sides through semicircular closed sound windows . The curved spire rises above richly profiled and strongly protruding cornices. Tower clocks are set into the frieze-like spaces between the cornice on each side. A nine-step stone staircase leads to the main portal. On the top staircase next to the main portal there are two limestone figures . They represent the Saints Peter and Paul. The 150 cm high statues date from 1735.

Interior

On both sides of the nave there are aisle-like rooms that are connected to one another by passages and are designed into galleries at the top. The nave is divided into two bays and a vestibule by mighty pairs of pillars. The individual sections of the nave are separated from each other by belt arches . There is a Bohemian square vault above the nave and choir . Stairs lead from the vestibule on both sides to the gallery. A 3/8 choir is indicated in the side apses with the help of pilaster strips .

High altar

On a sarcophagus-like cafeteria there is a column retable with an oval-framed picture of the Virgin Mary. This is a copy of the picture "Comforter of the Afflicted" in the Capuchin Church in Vienna .
