The Evangelical Pauluskirche is the church building of the Evangelical Parish AB Wien-Landstraße, which belongs to the Superintendentur Vienna of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Austria and is located in the third district of Vienna Landstraße at Sebastianplatz 4.

building

The construction of the church began in 1962, but the ceremonial inauguration did not take place until November 15, 1970. For cost reasons, the church was incorporated into a residential building with 48 condominiums. The architect was Rudolf Angelides , who later also designed the Protestant church on the way in Meidling .

In 1977 an organ was installed on loan , which was replaced in 1978 by the organ still in use today. Originally, there was space for an organ on the gallery ; In 2008 the organ was completely renovated and in the course of this it was also moved to its original place on the gallery. In 1990 a central aisle was built in the Pauluskirche, since then there have been around 300 seats. In 2000 the old chandeliers were replaced by new, modern lamps. After that, renovation work took place again and again - especially in the adjoining rooms, anteroom, community hall and youth room. Furthermore, at the request of the municipality, a sidewalk was installed, which functions as a small forecourt in front of the entrance area.

In the course of the general renovation (beginning of autumn 2009) of the facade of the property at Sebastianplatz 4, the outer facade of the Pauluskirche was also repaired. Due to the weather conditions in winter 2009/2010, the painting of the facade unfortunately had to be postponed, but could be finished before the Easter holidays 2010 under the direction of architect Christoph Thetter.

“The two-colored violet cross stands as a symbol of mourning and redemption in front of the divine, golden background. The façade surfaces that enclose the church rooms are designed in an earthy color, as a symbol of the memory of where the physical part of the human being comes from and where he will return. The holistic person with his divine, golden background then steps through the golden gate to his Sunday transformation in the service. The basement is framed by frame elements, which, in keeping with urban planning, are in harmony with the neighboring houses in terms of color. Obviously, the design may seem arbitrary, but at least it was a concern to use inadequate means to create the unspeakable. "

- Christoph Thetter

In the summer of 2010, another building project will be tackled after the facade. After a long waiting period and intensive planning by a specially founded working group consisting of members of the community and under the direction and guidance of architect Christoph Thetter, the groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of the community hall, the youth room and the kitchen took place on Monday, July 5th, 2010 set.

local community

With the tolerance patent of Emperor Joseph II , the now state-recognized Evangelical-Lutheran community of Vienna was established in 1782, with its seat in the Lutheran city church at Dorotheergasse 18. From there, the Lutheran residents of Landstrasse were also looked after.

On July 1, 1894, a daughter congregation was founded in Vienna-Landstrasse , after daughter congregations had already emerged in Gumpendorf and Währing ( Luther Church ). Later, the Vienna-Landstrasse congregation was to become the mother congregation for parishes in Favoriten , Simmering , Floridsdorf , Schwechat , Bruck an der Leitha , Korneuburg , Stockerau and Mistelbach . In 1899 the decision was made to buy the house at Schützengasse 13 in order to build a prayer room, which was completed in 1900.

On January 1, 1922, the Vienna Evangelical parish was AB Lutheran town church in six boroughs shared. The evangelical sub-community AB Wien-Landstrasse now also received a rectory , a community council and a presbytery . In 1936, the sub-community Landstrasse and the mother community acquired a building site for the construction of a church at Sebastianplatz 4. Because of the Second World War and the needs of the post-war period, the originally planned building that dominated the space could not be built; the church building was postponed indefinitely. In 1947 the prayer room in Schützengasse was converted into a small church, which was inaugurated on June 20, 1948 as the Paul Gerhardt Church (named after the theologian Paul Gerhardt ).

On October 1, 1949, a new constitution of the Evangelical Churches A. and HB in Austria came into force through a decree of the Upper Church Council . All Vienna sub- parishes - including the Evangelical Parish at Wien-Landstrasse - were elevated to independent parishes . The construction of the church on Sebastianplatz began in 1962 and was completed in 1970. In 1992 the Paul Gerhardt Church in Schützengasse and the old rectory were sold to the Korean Presbyterian parish.
