Peter Gerl senior

Peter Liborius Gerl (born October 22, 1795 in Vienna ; † April 29, 1884 ibid) was an Austrian architect and city architect.

Life

Peter Gerl came from a widespread family of builders from Vienna who were already active in this branch in the 17th century. As the son of the builder Liborius Thaddäus Gerl and his wife Katharina (née Unrein), Peter Liborius Gerl was born in Vienna on October 22, 1795 and initially trained as a bricklayer with his father. His uncle Josef Ignaz Gerl also worked as a civil master builder in Vienna; likewise Peter Gerl's brother Franz Josef . He then graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg from 1809 to 1813 , where he also belonged to the civic military corps of the academy and around 1818 became a foreman with his brother-in-law Alois Ignaz Göll . Just one year later, Gerl kk became a fortification builder and works manager, but was only accepted into the builders' guild, which was known at the time because of their ongoing harassment, in 1823. Peter Gerl was also the victim of one of these harassments in 1819 when his brother-in-law asked the guild to recognize Gerl's plan for the kk military cast house on the Seilerstätte as a pupil's piece. Although the guild agreed, the issue of the certificate was then very tedious.

In 1823 he also became a citizen of Vienna and married his wife Therese Walburga Lutz von Lutzenau, with whom he had twelve children. His seven sons were Peter Rudolf (1827–1901), August Heinrich (1834–?), Heinrich Gerl (1835–1870), Ferdinand Heinrich (1836–?), Wilhelm (1838–?), Josef (1839–?) And Alois (1840–?), Whereby only the first-born and Heinrich, who died early, followed in their father's footsteps and also became town builders and civil architects. His five daughters were Henriette Eleonore (1828–1905), Johanna (~ 1831–1919), Therese, Leopoldine and another daughter who was not named. His first-born daughter and at the same time his second-born child, Henriette Eleonore, married the architect and town builder Anton Ubell , among others .

Peter Gerl himself ran a very successful construction company, building rental houses both according to his own plans and partly as the client, but also according to plans by other architects. The focus of his work was in his home district, today's 3rd Viennese district Landstrasse . Since his son Peter Rudolf worked alongside his father in the company at an advanced age, it is difficult today to ascribe the completed buildings to one of the two, as the buildings were mostly simply ascribed to a "Peter Gerl" and no addition was made, whether father or not Son were involved. However, it is known that the two also worked together on a number of buildings.

Peter Liborius Gerl died on April 29, 1883 at the age of 89, as it is called, of old age .

Peter Gerl ran a very successful construction company, building according to his own designs as well as plans by other architects. He built a large number of residential buildings in the suburbs of Vienna, the design of which was mostly simple and inexpensive. His son Peter worked with him at times. Since Peter Gerl was always referred to in a simplified manner, it is often impossible to differentiate in detail which of the two builders was meant.
