Josef Meissl the Elder

Josef Meissl the Elder (* 1730 in Asparn an der Zaya ; † April 14, 1790 in Vienna ) was an Austrian builder and architect .

Life

Josef Meissl came from Asparn an der Zaya in Lower Austria , where he probably completed an apprenticeship with his father, a master bricklayer. In 1755 he appeared at the Vienna Academy , where he attended several courses in painting, sculpture, and architecture. In 1761 Meissl was accepted into the Viennese master builder guild. But he also worked in Poysdorf and in 1767 became Principal Liechtenstein Construction Director. As Isidore Canevale's successor , he was appointed court architect to Prince Alois I in 1887 .

Meissl's nephew was Joseph Hardtmuth , with whom he also often worked. Among the eleven children of Meissl was the son of the same name, Josef Meissl the Younger, who also became a master builder.

Josef Meissl worked as a builder, architect and building contractor. As a speculator, he built houses on building plots belonging to him, such as the grounds of the former Himmelpfort monastery in Vienna. A large area of ​​activity was also the renovation and expansion of existing older buildings. Meissl represented the style of the Josephine slab with simple and functional facades.
