Ignaz Ram

Ignaz Ram (born October 3, 1781 in Weitra , Lower Austria ; † January 3, 1850 in Vienna ) was an Austrian master builder and architect .

Life

It is not known when the son of a soap maker from Weitra came to Vienna and where he received his training as a bricklayer . The first documented building project in Vienna dates from 1813. In the 1820s he was already busy as a master builder and in 1830 he became a city master builder. He filed a patent for a desiccant that should act against moisture in apartments. From 1833 Ram continued the business after the deceased Adam Hildwein . In that year he was also used by the state administration to survey the old university grounds. In the last decade of his life from 1840 onwards, only modifications by him are documented.

Ignaz Ram was married and had seven children, including their son Franz Ram , who was also a city architect. He probably gave him some construction contracts, so that the attribution is sometimes difficult.

Ignaz Ram was one of the leading builders of the Vormärz , who worked almost exclusively in the Vienna suburbs and built rental houses there. He made use of a classical language of forms, which, in keeping with the spirit of the times, became more and more sober and simple. The facades show a tendency towards flat design. Among the buildings designed by Ram, the large Elisabethinerzinshaus stands out. The renovations that began in 1840 were probably carried out by his son.
