Géza Hajós

Géza Hajós (born September 14, 1942 in Budapest ; † February 12, 2019 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian and garden historian of Hungarian origin.

Life

Hajós studied history and art history at the University of Budapest from 1960 to 1965 . In 1965 he moved to Austria and received his doctorate in art history at the University of Vienna in 1971 with a dissertation on the Romanesque sculptures in the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Pécs / Hungary.

At the same time, he also worked at the Federal Monuments Office in Vienna from 1965 , initially in the architecture-related monument inventory and monument research (Institute for Austrian Art Research) until 1986, where he worked on, among other things, several volumes of Austrian art topography and the Dehio manual . In 1986 he became the first head of the department, then the department for historical gardens , which was abolished after his retirement in 2007.

Hajós was a member of the founding board of the Austrian Association of Art Historians (now known as the Association of Austrian Art Historians ), from 1984 editor-in-chief of the first issues of the association's publication "Art Historians" (today's title "Art History Current"). In addition, Hajós was the initiator and decisive motor behind the founding of the Austrian Society for Historic Gardens in 1991 and its first general secretary.

From 1992 he completed his habilitation on modern art history at the University of Graz . He had lectureships at the universities of Innsbruck, Vienna and Graz and was the author of more than 200 scientific publications on historical garden architecture (with a focus on facilities of the 18th century and the Romantic period), architectural history of the 18th and 19th centuries and the theory of monument preservation . 1989–2014 he was co-editor of the garden art .

Hajós has been a member of the International Committee for Historic Gardens and Cultural Landscapes ( ICOMOS and IFLA ) since 1993, and on its Advisory Board since 2005. For UNESCO he prepared reports on the gardens at and around the Royal Palace of Caserta in Italy, the Kew Gardens in England and the baroque park of Schwetzingen Castle in Germany.

Géza Hajós died after a long illness in February 2019 at the age of 76 in Vienna.

Awards

Hajós was Honorary President of the Austrian Society for Historic Gardens and an honorary member of ICOMOS ' International Scientific Committee for Historic Gardens .
