Consuelo N. Bailey

Consuelo Northrop Bailey (born October 10, 1899 in Fairfield , Vermont , † September 9, 1976 in Burlington , Vermont) was an American lawyer and politician who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1955 to 1957 .

Life

Consuelo Northrop Bailey was born on his parents' Northrop Farm near Fairfield, Vermont. After graduating from high school in St. Albans , she studied at the University of Vermont and earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy . For some time she worked as a teacher, then she attended the Boston University School of Law and studied law . After graduating in 1925, she became the seventh woman to be admitted to the bar by the Vermont Bar Association. That same year she was appointed Public Prosecutor for Burlington, and from 1927 to 1931 she was the Chittenden County District Attorney , the only woman in that position in the east of the Mississippi at the time . She was admitted to the Vermont Supreme Court in 1926 and the United States District Court in 1927, which became the first woman to be admitted to the United States Supreme Court in 1933. In 1942 he was admitted to the United States Court of International Trade .

In the Senate of Vermont , she was elected in 1930 and belonged to this 1931-1933 at. She sat in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1951 to 1955 . There she became the first speaker in 1953. Simultaneously, she was appointed to the US Post Office Advisory Board by President Dwight D. Eisenhower . She won the election to lieutenant governor in 1954 and her term lasted from 1955 to 1957. She was the first woman to hold this office in a state.

Bailey was a member of the Republican Party and a member of town, county and state committees. In 1936 she was elected committee woman for Vermont and held that office for 37 years. She was elected as a Vermont delegate to national meetings of the Republican Party in 1936 and 1944. In the 1956 and 1972 presidential elections, she was a member of the Electoral College for Vermont.

Consuelo Bailey married Henry Albon Bailey in 1940. Together they had a law practice until the husband fell ill. Then she continued the practice on her own. Henry Albon Bailey died in 1961. Consuelo N. Bailey died on September 9, 1976 in Burlington. Her grave is in Sheldon Cemetery in Sheldon.
