Phillip "Phil" Scott (* 4. August 1958 in Barre , Vermont ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He has been the governor of Vermont since 2017 . The former entrepreneur and racing driver was previously the state senator from 2000 and vice governor of the state from 2011 .

Life

Phil Scott was born in Barre, Vermont. He graduated from the University of Vermont , where he earned a Bachelor of Science . Since 1996 he has been a co-owner of DuBois Construction in Middlesex . Scott is a stock car driver and drives Thunder Road races . He was a champion of the Thunder Road Late Model Series in 1996 and 1998 and the Thunder Road Milk Bowl in 1997 and 1999 . In 2002 he won the Thunder Road and Airborne LMS track championships and the American Canadian Tour championship for the third time. At the moment, with 26 victories, he is the driver with the most victories in the modern era of stock cars.

As a member of the Vermont Republican Party, he served in the Vermont Senate for Washington County from 2000 to 2010 . There he was a member of the Transportation Committee and Chairman of the Institutions Committee .

As of 2011, Scott was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont. In September 2015, he announced that he would run for the office of governor of his state in the 2016 election. He won against the Democratic candidate Sue Minter on November 8, 2016 and took office in January 2017.

In September 2019, he became the first governor of his party to support the impeachment process against President Trump launched by the Democrats in Congress over Trump's attempt to persuade the Ukrainian president to investigate his political opponent Joe Biden .

Scott lives in Berlin , Vermont. He is married to Diana McTeague Scott and has two daughters.
