Paul Dillingham, Jr. (born August 10, 1799 in Shutesbury , Franklin County , Massachusetts , † July 26, 1891 in Waterbury , Vermont ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Vermont from 1865 to 1867 . From 1843 to 1847 he was a member of the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

In 1805 Paul Dillingham came to Waterbury, Vermont with his father. There he attended the local schools. After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1823. He then started to work in his new profession in Waterbury. Between 1826 and 1844 he was also a justice of the peace.

Between 1833 and 1835 and again from 1837 to 1840 Dillingham was an MP in the Vermont House of Representatives . In between, he was District Attorney in Washington County from 1835 to 1838 . In 1837, 1856 and 1870 he was a member of a commission for the revision of the Vermont state constitution. From 1841 to 1842 and again in 1861 he was a member of the State Senate . Between March 4, 1843 and March 3, 1847 Dillingham was a member of Congress . Politically, he was originally a member of the Democrats . He later switched to the Republican Party .

Governor of Vermont and another résumé

Between 1862 and 1865 Dillingham was lieutenant governor of his state. In 1865 he was elected as the Republican Party candidate for new governor. He took up his new office on October 13, 1865 and, after being re-elected in 1866, could remain in office until October 13, 1867. During his tenure, the state's school system was reformed. A school for teacher training was also established at that time. In 1867 he refused to run again. After the end of his governorship, Dillingham was again active as a lawyer until 1875. After that, he retired. He died in July 1891 at the age of 91. With his wife Julia Carpenter he had seven children, including their son William , who was also to become governor of Vermont from 1888 to 1890.
