William W. Grout

William Wallace Grout (born May 24, 1836 in Compton , Québec , Canada , † October 7, 1902 in Kirby , Vermont ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the third and from 1885 and 1901 the second constituency of the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Grout received a good primary education. After studying law at Poughkeepsie Law School in New York and being admitted to the bar in 1857, he began to practice his new profession in Barton . During the Civil War he was a lieutenant colonel in a Vermont volunteer unit that fought on the side of the Union. After the war, Grout was a district attorney in Orleans County . Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1868 and 1870 he was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives . In 1876 he also became a member of the State Senate . There he was acting President of the House.

In 1880, Grout was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third district of Vermont , where he succeeded Bradley Barlow on March 4, 1881 . After the end of a legislative period, the constituency was dissolved. Since he ran in vain to remain in Congress in another district , he had to give up his seat on March 3, 1883. In the elections of 1884 he was re-elected to Congress in the second district of Vermont. There he took over the seat held by Luke P. Poland on March 4, 1885. Since he also won the seven subsequent congressional elections in this constituency, he was able to complete eight consecutive terms by March 3, 1901. From 1889 to 1891 he was chairman of the committee for the administration of the federal district ( District of Columbia ). Between 1895 and 1901 he was a member of the War Department's Expenditure Control Committee .

After his tenure in Congress, William Grout still worked in agriculture. But he died on October 7, 1902.
