Elbert Sidney Brigham (born October 19, 1877 in St. Albans , Vermont , † July 5, 1962 ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1931 he represented the first constituency of the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Elbert Brigham attended St. Albans High School until 1898 and then Middlebury College until 1903 . Most of his life he dealt with agricultural affairs. His focus was on milk production. He was very successful in this area. In addition to this activity, he was also politically active.

Brigham was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1911 and 1912 he was auditor for the City of St. Albans and from 1913 to 1924 he was Vermont Secretary of Agriculture ( State Commissioner for Agriculture ). During the First World War in 1918 he was also a member of the Federal Commission for the Management of Food and an advisory commission of the Federal Government on agricultural issues. From 1922 to 1960, Brigham was the curator of Middlebury College and in 1925 he became director of the National Life Insurance Co.

In 1924, Brigham was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Frederick G. Fleetwood on March 4, 1925 . After two re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until March 3, 1931. His last term in office was overshadowed by the events of the Great Depression. In 1930 Brigham declined to run again. After serving in Congress, he was a member of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in 1932 . Between 1933 and 1936 he was a member of the Vermont State Banking Committee. Between 1937 and 1948 he headed the National Insurance Co. in Montpelier . From 1944 to 1957 he was also President of Franklin County Savings Bank & Trust Co. , until 1962 its Chairman of the Board. Elbert Brigham died in July 1962 in his birthplace St. Albans and was buried there.
