Elias Keyes

Elias Keyes (born April 14, 1758 in Ashford , Windham County , Colony of Connecticut , † July 9, 1844 in Stockbridge , Vermont ) was an American politician . Between 1821 and 1823 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elias Keyes was born in British colonial times. He attended the public schools in his home country and then studied law. In 1785 he moved to Stockbridge, Vermont. He began a political career in his new home state. He became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1793 and 1796, 1798 and 1802 and in 1818 and 1820 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Vermont . From 1803 to 1813 and again from 1815 to 1817 he was a member of the governor's advisory staff .

In 1814 Keyes was a member of an assembly to revise the constitution of his state. He was also an associate judge in the Windsor County District Court from 1803 to 1814 . Between 1815 and 1818 he presided over this court. In 1820 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth district of Vermont . There he took over from William Strong on March 4, 1821 . Until March 3, 1823, he completed a term in Congress . Then he withdrew from politics.
