George Tisdale Hodges

George Tisdale Hodges (born July 4, 1789 in Clarendon , Republic of Vermont , † August 9, 1860 in Rutland , Vermont ) was an American politician . Between 1856 and 1857 he represented the first constituency of the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Hodges attended public schools in his home country and then went into business and political life in Rutland. He was initially a member of the Whig Party and switched to the Republicans after its dissolution . He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1827 to 1829 and again from 1839 to 1840 . Between 1845 and 1847 he was a member of the State Senate ; from 1846 he was its president. In 1848 he was elector in the presidential election , where he voted for the victorious Whig candidate Zachary Taylor . Hodges was also President of the Bank of Rutland for over 25 years .

After the death of Congressman James Meacham , Hodges was elected as a Republican candidate in the by-election to succeed him in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . This made him the first Congressman from his Vermont party, which was founded in 1854. Between December 1, 1856 and March 3, 1857, Hodges ended the legislative term of his predecessor. In the regular congressional elections of 1856, he decided not to run again.

George Hodges died on August 9, 1860 in Rutland and was buried there.
