Alvah Sabin (born October 23, 1793 in Georgia , Vermont , †  January 22, 1885 in Sycamore , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1857 he represented the third constituency of the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alvah Sabin attended public schools in his home country and then Burlington College . He then became a member of the Vermont Militia and took part in the British-American War of 1812 . After the war he studied theology in Philadelphia . Sabin finished his education in 1821 with a degree from Columbian College , now George Washington University in Washington . After his ordination as a minister, he preached in various cities before returning to his native Georgia in 1825. For the next 40 years he was pastor of the Georgia Baptist Church in addition to his political activities .

Politically, Sabin joined the opposition to the Democratic Party of Andrew Jackson and was a member of the Whig Party . Between 1826 and 1862 he was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives for 17 years with interruptions . In 1841, 1843 and 1845 he was also a member of the State Senate . In 1841 he was the executive officer of the State of Vermont as Secretary of State .

In 1852, Sabin was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Whigs candidate in the Third District of Vermont. There he took over from James Meacham on March 4, 1853 . After re-election in 1857, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1857 . From 1855 he was chairman of the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business . His time in Congress was overshadowed by the discussions leading up to the civil war. In 1856, Sabin renounced another candidacy.

Sabin was a delegate at the first nationwide assembly for the abolition of slavery . Between 1861 and 1862 he served as the County Commissioner for Franklin County . In 1867 he moved to Sycamore, Illinois, where he again worked as a minister. He died in Sycamore in January 1885 at the age of 91 and was buried in his hometown of Georgia.
