Harry Alonzo Black (born November 22, 1879 in Coventry , Vermont , † April 9, 1923 in Wells River ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ), who was Secretary of State of Vermont from 1919 to 1923 .

Life

Harry Alonzo Black was born to Henry F. Black and Melvina S. Brooks in Coventry, Vermont. He received his training at the Derby Academy and his admission to the bar in 1903. From then on he worked as a lawyer in Newport . As assistant to the clerk of the Vermont House of Representatives , he served from 1906 to 1910.

Black was Newport City Councilor from 1918 to 1920. From 1919 to 1923 he was Secretary of State of Vermont. He belonged to the congregationalist denomination and was an active member of the Freemasons .

On May 30, 1905, Harry A. Black married Jane Marion Gates in Newport. The couple had 2 sons. Black died during his tenure as Secretary of State on April 9, 1923 in Wells River as a result of a train accident. Black was on the way from Newport to Montpelier after a long illness , when he crossed tracks while changing trains, he fell and was hit by a rolling train. This was approaching so quickly that there was no time to save Black. Orlando L. Martin , Speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives, was an eyewitness to the accident . It is not known where his grave is located.
