Coventry is north of Orleans County. The Black River flows through the town in the west from south to north and flows into Lac Memphrémagog . In the east, the Barton River also flows in a northerly direction and it also flows into Lac Memphrémagog. Major Elias Buel of Coventry (Connecticut) received the grant for Coventry on October 23, 1784 . Five other family members of Major Buel were among the recipients of this grant, as was Ira Allen . The grant stated that the town would lie between the towns of Shoreham, Orwell, Hubbardton, Sudbury and Whiting. Since Allen, who knew the area as a surveyor, was one of the takers, the Vermont government confirmed the grant. However, there was no more space.

Four years later, Major Buel went to the government and applied for a "flying grant" with which he wanted to find abandoned land to replace the ineffective grant for Coventry. This was assured to him. However, by the late 1780s, it was barely possible to find a contiguous 23,000 acre piece of land. A large piece of land was found, which today forms the town of Coventry, a second piece of land, today known as Buels Gore , and the Coventry Leg or Coventry Gore , which, however, was added to the town of Newport in 1816.
