Geographical location

Charleston is in northeast Orleans County. The Clyde River flows centrally through the town from northwest to southeast and forms some larger lakes, such as Pensioner Pond , Charleston Pond and Toad Pond . The largest lake in the area of Town is, however, the location in the north and the Seymour Lake related Echo Lake . The area of ​​the town is hilly without any significant elevations. Commodore Abraham Whipple received the grant for the area on November 6, 1780 to honor him for his work in the defense of Charleston , South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War . The town was founded on November 10, 1780 and Whipple named it Navy because he had served in the American Navy. The first settler in Navy was Andrew McGaffey with his family in 1803, and Abner Allyn also settled in the same year. The town's constituent assembly took place on March 31, 1806. On November 6, 1825, Navy in Charleston was renamed by government act. Charleston is divided into East and West Charleston.

East Charleston Plymouth Congregational Church

In East Charleston, Jonas Allen built the first sawmill in 1824. A flour mill followed in 1834, built by John Cushman. A church was built in 1855.

West Charleston got its first flour mill in 1810. The Orthodox Congregational Church was founded in 1844 and the church was built from 1854 to 1859, a stone church called the Union House .
