history

Newport

Today's city was founded as the main settlement center of the town of Newport around 1800 and originally known as Pickeral Point . In 1816 parts of the later completely dissolved Town Salem were added to the present city area. By this time the name of the settlement had already been changed to Lake Bridge . With the construction of the railway, which connected the place with White River Junction from 1863 , Newport developed into the economic center of the area. A hotel was built as well as a rental stable; From 1867, ferry traffic on Lake Memphremagog began with the paddle steamer Lady of the Lake , which today adorns the city's seal. In 1868 the settlement was renamed the Village of Newport , was elevated to the administrative seat of the county in 1886 and, after the construction of a courthouse, took over the county court instead of neighboring Irasburg . On March 5, 1918, Newport was finally raised to an independent City, into which small parts of the adjacent Town Derby had previously been incorporated.

Since the 1950s, the main branch of the economy, logging, increasingly lost its importance; since the 1980s it has almost completely come to a standstill in the area. 1967 the railway stopped the passenger traffic; however, freight traffic has continued to this day. Several large employers shut down during the economic crises of the 1990s and 2000s. The residents of Newport move to other, economically better off areas. Newport is one of those places in Vermont that has long-term populations; compared to the 2000 census, Newport lost about 10% of its residents.

The city's most important employer is the North Country Hospital , which is the medical center for a wide area.

Religions

Newport City is home to the Assemblies of God , Church of the Nazarene , Episcopal , Catholic , United Church of Christ, and Methodist congregations .
