Averill was founded on October 23, 1762 with an area of 23,040 acres (about 93 km²) as one of the New Hampshire Grants by Benning Wentworth . Samuel Averill received the grant together with other speculators. This town was named after Averill. Averill received 21 grants from Wentworth in Vermont and others in New Hampshire. Eight of the Vermont grants are in Essex County. They make up about half of the county. Averill lived in Kent , Connecticut, and many of the other Wentworth Grant recipients never settled in Vermont.
Settlement took place in the town only in the northern tip. In 1880 the town had its largest population with 48 inhabitants. Averill is one of the few towns that never had a post office. The residents make their living from logging or hunting, and summer camps are offered at Forest Lake.
