Canaan is a town in Essex County in the US state of Vermont . It had a total of 972 inhabitants at the last census in 2010. It is part of the Berlin Micropolitan Statistical Area .

Geographical location

Canaan is located in northeast Essex County, south of the Canadian border . The Connecticut River forms the eastern border with New Hampshire , and there are other small streams that flow into the Connecticut River. The Lac Wallace protrudes to the north on the area of ​​the town. The surface is hilly, the highest point is the 682 m high Canaan Hill .

Connecticut River

The Grant for Canaan was given on February 25, 1782 by the Vermont Republic to John Wheeler, Jonathan and Araad Hunt and 41 others. Settlement began in 1785. The area of ​​Norfolk Town was added to the town in 1801. The early settlers lived from agriculture and hunting. The border with Canada was made mandatory in 1925 and that with New Hampshire in 1934. Until then, there were occasional skirmishes on the borders. At the beginning of the 20th century, many immigrants from Quebec moved to Canaan.

In 1895 a subsidiary of Ethan Allen Global, Inc. was established in Beecher Falls. Furniture was made at this location. At times the factory was the largest furniture factory east of Michigan. The location was closed in 2009. As a result, 250 people lost their jobs.

In a west-east direction parallel to the border with Canada, Vermont State Route 114 runs along the northern border of the town. It leads to Avrill in the west. In a north-south direction, Vermont State Route 102 branches off from it in a south direction.

Alice M. Ward Library

Canaan is part of the Essex North Supervisory Union with Bloomfield, Brunswick, Lemington and Norton .

The Canaan Schools offer classes for around 200 pupils from kindergarten through the 12th grade.

The Alice M. Ward Library is on Park Street, in a former stagecoach station. The building was known as Jacobs Stand and was erected in 1846. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places . The building was purchased by Alice M. Ward in 1888. She was the wife of doctor Dr. Artemas Ward. He set up his practice in part of the building. In her will, Alice M. Ward left the building to the town with the condition that a library be established in the building. In a meeting in the town in December 1930 this inheritance was accepted.
