history
Around 1830 a mill was built at the inlet to this lake, which was converted into a steam engine-powered T-shirt factory around 1880. It was only with the construction of the rail link from Montreal in Canada to Portland in Maine that the place gained supraregional importance because the two rail lines that operated this connection had their transfer point here (see Montreal – Island Pond and Portland – Island Pond ). In addition, a forest railway branched off from this main line nearby, which opened up the area for logging and Island Pond served as a transfer station for the wood. With the end of passenger traffic in 1960 and the closure of the depot in 1966, Island Pond lost its importance. The line still exists and is now operated by the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad .
The special community with a Christian - rigorous background Twelve Tribes settled in Island Pond in 1977 after they had left Tennessee . In the isolation of the area, she sought protection from government interference. In 1984 there was a state raid on allegations of child abuse.
