Canaan is a census-designated place in Essex County of the state of Vermont in the United States . At the 2010 census there were 392 people in the CDP Canaan. The CDP Canaan covers the settlement area in the town of Canaan on the Connecticut River . It is part of the Berlin Micropolitan Statistical Area .
history
As the settlement area of the town of Canaan, the Grant for Canaan of February 25, 1782, which was awarded by the Vermont Republic to John Wheeler, Jonathan and Araad Hunt and 41 others, also affects today's CDP with the Village on the Connecticut River. Settlement of the town began in 1785. The borders with Canada and New Hampshire were made binding in 1925. Until then, there were occasional skirmishes on the borders. West Stewartstown is located on the New Hampshire bank of the Connecticut River
